Au Pair Adventures in the US of A

I had been looking to work internationally for a long time, before I found Smaller Earth. Unfortunately, each program I would find, would have something wrong with it or wouldn’t check all of the boxes. Then a friend of mine told me about an Au Pair program that she was interested in doing so I checked out the website, which turned out to be Smaller Earth. I was impressed straight off the mark and sent a few emails with queries I had, which were answered promptly. Within 6 weeks I had completed the paper work, had face to face interviews, and then had been placed with a family. My host family and I couldn’t have been a more perfect match, we not only have a good professional relationship but also have a great personal relationship. I really feel like I am apart of their family.
During my time in the USA, I have traveled all of the east coast. On both personal trips and trips with my host family. Some of my favourite trips have included a road trip with my best friends up to Niagara Falls which took 12 hours after we broke down in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. As luck would have it we were right outside of a garage whose mechanic, Bob, had also broken down because he’d forgotten to put petrol in his car. It was a weekend I’ll never forget.I spent part of New Years Eve in Time Square squashed between a German and a Mexican, and had an amazing time. Then rang in the New Year watching the fire works over the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan sat on a fire escape with a cup of tea and some rich tea biscuits. Which again, is something I’ll never forget.I went to Maine with my host family last February, for fun in the snow! We had a great time and I really didn’t want to go home. The highlight of the trip was a ride on the back of a racing snow mobile on the frozen Lake Crystal, we reached speeds of 92 mph, which was a terrifyingly incredible experience. So that’s the east coast done, I have decided to extend with my host family for one more year and will hopefully get to the west coast at some point. My host family and I couldn’t be more happy with the way things have worked out and we are truly excited to see what the next year has in store for us.
