Staying in a ski chalet has traditionally meant lavish cooked breakfasts every morning, piles of freshly baked cakes every afternoon and monster five-course meals every evening. But this is beginning to change as the smartest chalets in the Alps are increasingly offering lighter menu options, fewer courses and more chef's nights off.

The boutique-style Chalet Abode – beautifully converted from an old Savoyard farmhouse – is four minutes' drive from the village of St Martin de Belleville (a driver is included in the cost).
