I was flown out to Spain to join an 85-metre Superyacht

A year after he finished his Flying Fish deckhand course, we catch up with 24 year old Daniel Jacob, from Cardiff.

I went straight to uni from school got my degree and then went into a job in finance.

After doing that for a year, and although I did enjoy it,I felt like I needed something to break up the 9-5 life. I felt like I needed some other kind of stimulation.

I've got an old friend who's worked on yachts for two yearsand he was always been telling me I should give it a go and so one day I decided that I would.

It was quite a spontaneous decision, but one I have definitely not regretted! I booked a two week course through Flying Fish in Cowes because my friend had recommended them. Again something I'm very happy I chose to do.

I did the Superyacht Deck course, and I can't tell you how highly I'd recommend this course. There are so many people that come down to Antibes and similar places with just their STCW 95. The deck course, although it only gave me a small taster of what it's like to work on a yacht, prepared me so much.

Whether it's the knot tutorials, the VHF courseor the day on a mini motoryacht scrubbing teak, all these skills allowed me to distinguish myself from all the other green newcomers.

I flew to Antibes on the 20th February, a few days after I finished the course, Less than a month later I was being flown out to Spain to join the 85 metre M/Y Sunrays. Initially as a day worker, then I had a trial period as a full time deckhand - and I've been here ever since!
