Jessica’s update – becoming a ski instructor

Jessica Langham is one of EA’s bloggers and she will keep us in the loop on her road to becoming a ski instructor on EA’s ski instructor course in Canada! Here is her first update.

BAM! After weeks of casual countdowns, and loads of goodbye shindigs and gatherings, I landed in Vancouver, and was suddenly very much stuck in this situation… but after then hitting up Calgary, and meeting the rest of the EA crew, all of my concerns and missing-my-mummy issues disappeared.

From the first night there I was surrounded by a huge bunch of cracking youngsters (and mature-age kids!) who all share the exact same interests as me, and are here for the same reason. Our first night in The Garage Sports Bar was an excellent way to meet everyone and get to know the people we’d be hanging out with for the next 5 months…the shots from the girl at the bar also definitely encouraged smiling, friendly people!

The next day in Calgary was spent getting bank accounts (yay, money!), SIN numbers and mobile phones. Unlimited texting plan was definitely the one for me! The rest of the day involved exploring, and hanging out with our new best buds. That night, a team dinner preceded a wild night amongst the clubs of Calgary, but largely the Irish bar scene. FYI, the drinking age in Alberta is 18, not 19 people! Many people woke up blurry-eyed the next morning, and some didn’t even sleep! But we did enjoy our trip to Walmart with our new roommates for Lake Louise to stock up on supplies for our big grown up lives without Mum’s cooking.

From there, we took a road-trip to Lake Louise, where we got the lowdown on the rules and regulations of the Fairmont Chateau’s staff accommodation. Basically, the main thing we all noted was that it was conveniently located directly above a pub (Stables Pub), which was good enough for us. The rooms are pretty basic, but very cool, with two bunks, several places to store our clothes, a bathroom, sofa, fridge and teeny-weeny kitchen. We’re all neighbours and have enjoyed many shenanigans in the hallway.

Banff is such a beautiful place, but then again so is everywhere here!

Canada is literally the most amazing place, the people are so friendly, and we are with so many fun and fantastic new friends! Can’t wait to get cracking with this course and officially be a professional skier!! Catch y’all later!
