What does Brexit mean for us?
- Cookery courses
Unless you've been living under a rock, you wont help but have noticed that last week the UK voted to exit the EU. Opinion polls prior to the Referendum were ever so close, but many people in the industry refused to believe that the British public would ever actually vote out of the EU. But the unbelievable has happened and it's time for us to face facts.
The fact is, there aren't any facts. No nation has exited the EU before so we'll be beating a new path of lengthy negotiations and new legislations.
What we do know is that there won't be any immediate changes. In order to extract ourselves from the EU, our Premier needs to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which gives us two years to fully withdraw from the bloc. However with David Cameron's resignation it is highly unlikely that he will make this monumental decision before he steps down (due to happen by October), and any new Prime Minister would be foolhardy to rush into this decision for fear of the wrath of the at least 48% of the British public who preferred to remain in the EU.
So what does this all mean for anyone wanting to work a season in Europe? Well for now, and for the foreseeable future, there is no change. Currently there is no need for a work permit or visa within the EU, your EHIC card is still valid, you can still be employed by a UK company and be seconded to an EU country. So if you were thinking of doing a season but had been holding off making decisions until after the results, just get on with your plans.
In fact, right now, there's more reason than ever to seize the day and do a season! Whilst there may be long term uncertainty for the travel industry within Europe following the result of the Referendum, for the next 2 - 5 years it is most likely that nothing will change and you'd be silly not to do a season whilst you can!
