Tour guide jobs
Escorted tours are operated by many types of holiday and field studies operators. Tour guides and group leaders educate and act as all-round experts in the areas they take their groups to visit.
A common factor for all tour guiding and group leader jobs is the fact that you will spend the vast majority of your time eating, travelling and working with your group. An easy, sociable personality is a common trait employers look for when recruiting guides. You also need to be cool under pressure and able to deal with emergencies efficiently, examples to demonstrate past experience in this area will be required during interview.
Tour Guides are often expected to give narration and deliver talks on the area or subject of the tour. Giving lectures is a difficult task to master but can be one of the most rewarding duties of a tour guide. Speaking in front of groups is nerve-wracking for everyone at first, but once you get used to it and work out your routine you will be surprised how easy it becomes. Tours use coaches a lot, to give you an idea on group size, a transit minibus will take around 12 to 18 people and a single decker coach (typical summer holiday tour party size) up to around 50 people.
